Requirements

Coaching and Management/Volunteer Requirements

The Cleveland Barons, USA Hockey, and the Coaching Education Program require both certification and registration to be eligible to Coach and Manage. A few basic steps requirements are as follows:

  1. Coaches and Managers: USA Hockey Registration as an On-Ice Coach or Off-Ice Manager or Volunteer (required every year).
  2. Coaches and Managers: Mid-American Hockey Background Screening (required every two years)
  3. Coaches and Managers: USA Hockey SafeSport Online Training (required every year)
  4. Coaches Only: USA Hockey Coaching Education Program Certification (to be completed by December 31)
  5. Coaches Only: USA Hockey Online Age Specific Modules (to be completed before stepping on the ice)
  6. Coaches and Managers: Concussion Certification (required every year)
  7. Coaches and Managers: Lindsay's Law (required every year)
  8. Coaches and Managers: Cleveland Barons Coaching and Manager Registration

USA Hockey SafeSport Training

The SafeSport Training and Refresher Training are each valid for one (1) season. Every year after you must do the refresher.

USA Hockey Coaching Education Program Registration

Find, register and attend the required certification clinic. (Cost is $40 plus any lunch fees if applicable) You can only attend one clinic per season and all coaches start at Level 1. (The coaching clinic season for Levels 1-3 officially runs from September 1 to December 31).

USA Hockey Online Age Specific Modules Registration

Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching. (Cost is $10 per module) (The online modules are available from September 1 to December 31.)

Complete the online video for coaches and initial the bottom of the handout.


DID YOUR USA HOCKEY LEVEL CERTIFICATION EXPIRE? HERE IS WHAT TO DO!

  • MY LEVEL 1 IS EXPIRED or EXPIRING THIS DECEMBER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
    • You must attend a Level 2 clinic AND complete the online age-specific module for each age level you are coaching if not previously taken prior to December 31 of the current playing season. Mite (8 and Under) coaches may remain at Level 1 (even if it is expired) until they move to another age level of play.
  • MY LEVEL 2 IS EXPIRED or EXPIRING THIS DECEMBER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
    • You must attend a Level 3 clinic AND complete the online age-specific module for each age level you are coaching if not previously taken prior to December 31 of the current playing season. Mite (8 and Under) coaches may remain at their current level (even if it is expired) until they move to another age level of play.
  • MY LEVEL 3 IS EXPIRED or EXPIRING THIS DECEMBER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
    • You must complete the online Level 3 recertification (Track 1 or Track 2) or attend a Level 4 clinic AND complete the online age-specific module for each age level you are coaching if not previously taken prior to December 31 of the current playing season. You can no longer attend another Level 3 clinic to recertify your Level 3 certification. Coaches of National Tournament Bound Tier I 14U, 16U, and 18/19U and Tier II 16U, and 18/19U teams must complete Level 4 the first year they are able to do so. Mite (8 and Under) coaches may remain at their current level (even if it is expired) until they move to another age level of play. You can determine which recertification track by looking at your information on the online certification list. Click on your name and you will see your full information. If there is one Level 3, then you would complete Track 1. If there are two Level 3s, then you would complete Track 2. If there are three or more Level 3s, then you must attend a Level 4 clinic.
